Grades for the Extra Credit English Assignment

Hi there!
I'm sure you girls have all been eagerly awaiting your grades for this assignment, so here we go!
I only got two back, but that's okay.
It was just a fun one for extra credit anyway, so no one actually had to do it.
I will grade Samantha's first:

Name: Samantha Parkington

My favorite Winter Olympic sport is ice skating. I like it because the skaters look very graceful. Thier costumes are very pretty. I like the ice dancing part, it looks very pretty and I love the way they dance on ice like they have been skating before they learned to walk! The figure skating is nice because they look like they are doing ballet. I love the flips and spins that they do, especially the one where the man throws the lady in the air and she spins around, and then the man catches her - all while they are skating on that slippery ice! A very big and beautiful feat.

The basics of why I like figure skating are: They look pretty, they look very at home on the ice, their costumes are beautiful, and lastly, they perform amazing feats that are a lot of fun to watch!

Samantha Parkington

Samantha, you essay flows very nicely, and you have also included some good points on why you like that sport. Your grade is:

A+!

Well done, Samantha!

Next up is Melody's one:

My Favourite Olympic Sport
By Melody

Today, I have been asked to write about my favourite Olympic Sport. I have chosen to write about figure-skating.

Figure skating is my favourite sport because I love how graceful the skaters look on the ice. All of those perfect twists, turns, jumps and glides just make me gasp in amazement at all of the effort that must go into it.

I especially like all the amazing costumes that skaters wear. Floaty skirts, shiny fabric, beads, sequins--bliss!

And that is why figure skating is my favourite Olympic Sport.

Melody

Melody, your essay was great as well, but it didn't flow into the ending as nicely as Samantha's did, therefore your grade is:

B+!

Good job, Melody.

I was happy to see that I had at least two essays turned in and how much work was put into them. Wonderful job, girls!

Note:
For anyone who was wondering about the school newsletter still not being out, we don't have enough entries yet, so please get writing!

For this class you will be learning how to do a braided hairstyle for gymnasts.

For this hair style you will need:
A wire hair brush (it's okay if you don't  have an american girl hair brush you can  use a hair brush for hair extensions which you can easily get for you local hair shop)
2 hairbands (which you have not used in your own hair)
And patience. Just follow this video on how to do it from Doll Diaries. And make sure to check out their website sometime, it's really cool!

Once you have practiced this a few times, and are happy with how it looks, please take a photo or two, and send them via email to Miss Adeline before February 13th. Results will be posted on the 13th or soon after.

Who does this one belong to??

Dear Students,
A while ago, I looked and saw that I'd got one entry for the Colonial life in America History essay, but someone forgot to put their name on!

If it belongs to one of you, please let me know so that I can grade it for you. It would be a great pity if you didn't let me know if it's yours, because it was a very good essay, and I was rather impressed when I read it.

If this isn't your essay, just ignore this post, but please remember to fill out all the required areas when you submit assignments and homework to avoid having mix-ups and delays.

Thank you!

Important announcement, PLEASE READ!!

Dear Girls,
First of all, I would like to say that I wish you all a very merry Christmas.

Secondly, I will be going away around Christmas time on a holiday with my family, as I'm sure many of you girls will be doing too. Could I please have someone offer to do the comment moderation, and keep an eye on things while I'm away? I believe you'll need a blogger account.

Since, I'm going away, things may be a little slower around here for a while, but we're hoping to get up and running smoothly again sometime early in the New Year.

If you have any assignments you submitted and haven't been graded yet, please let me know so I can get that done before I leave.

If you have anything (homework, assignments etc) that you have not submitted yet, but still want to do, please send it in as soon as possible.

If you have anything you want to put in the School Newsletter, please let Miss Meghan know so that she can organise it before she runs out of room.

That will be all.

Happy Holidays!

Well done, Girls!

Your grade:

Great job, Paige!

And last but not least, we have Sammie's bag. Which she sent in two photos of.

Hairdressing class-Learn how to do a fishtail braid

In this first assignment I thought you would like to start off with a fish tail braid. It look's harder than it is but it's actually quite easy. So, lets begin...

First you will need a hair brush (if you cannot get a American girl brand brush than one from a hair dresser shop for hair extensions will do, as long as it has metal bristles.) You will also need a hair band or two (preferably one that you have not used in you hair, as this might make your doll's hair sticky) and lastly, a lot of patience.

And so grab your doll, a hairbrush and hairbands, and let's get started! I have included a video tutorial on doing a fishtail braid from Doll Diaries.
Once you have done a fishtail braid that you are satisfied with, (this may take a bit of practice), then please email a photo of it to Miss Adeline, by the 15th of November. Your grades will be posted as soon as possible. Have fun!

History Assignment Grades

Dear Students,
Here are the grades which you got for your History Assignment where you had to draw a colonial gown. We had quite a few entries for this one, and they were all beautiful!

This is Cara's one. Isn't it just beautiful? I really like the gathered sleeves.
Wow Janet! Those stripes were very inventive!

I love the Stomacher on yours Kaya!

I like all the pretty decoration on the bodice!

Your gown is perfect for a ball, Melody!

I love the gorgeous floral fabric on this one, Rikki!

Now, you all did really well! Here are your grades:

Cara: I really liked your picture, however, this is meant to be 1774 in America, and those kind of sleeves weren't really seen until a bit later, and I don't really think that they were worn much in America. However, your drawing was still really good, so I give you...............

B+!

Well done, Cara!

Janet: Your picture was really unique! Except that the patchwork skirt and vertical stripes aren't really authentic, but you still got the general idea in the style. I give you...................

C+!

Great job, Janet!

Kaya: I loved your picture! The gown was very authentic, even down to the beautiful detail on the stomacher, and the ruffles on the elbow-length sleeves! I give you.....................

A+

Fantastic effort, Kaya!

Kit: I liked your picture, but unfortunately, the style of the gown you drew wasn't really seen until a bit later. And the accuracy isn't perfect, considering if you put the gown in 1774, then it looks kinda like the sort of dress a servant would wear, but you put decoration on the bodice, and gave the lady a necklace. I still really liked it, but unfortunately it wasn't as accurate as some of the other ones, as it looked like something out of the 1790's to the early 1800's. Here is your grade........................

C!

Very nice, Kit!

Melody: Your gown looks pretty much exactly like something that Felicity or Elizabeth would wear to the Christmas Eve ball! However, the gold fabric and lace isn't really very authentic, as only very rich people would be able to afford it. But.....the green and pink are perfect, and so is the beaded choker! I award you with.....................

A!

Fantabulous job, Melody!

Rikki: I think your dress is as good as Kaya's! This would be a perfect dress for wearing at home, so not too fancy, but still very elegant. The long sleeves would make this an ideal dress to wear in the colder months, and the pleated lace ruffle on the neckline is very authentic, exactly like what they would've worn back then. I will give you...................

A+!

Fabulous picture, Rikki!

History Assignment

Good evening, Students!

Today I have a fun History assignment for you to do.

You are going to draw an outfit appropriate for a girl of your age to wear in 1774, which is AG Felicity's time.

You will need to do a bit of research for this one. I would recommend looking at photos and paintings of gowns from that era, and getting a few ideas of how the basic clothes are supposed to look.

Once you have finished, please remember to sign and date your drawing, scan it in, and email it to me by the 5th of November. Grades will be posted soon.

Another English assignment for you

Good evening, Students!

Today I have organised another English assignment for you to do. This one is going to be fun!
You will need to do an essay on.....the history of the American girl company! Yep, that's right, the people who made you, (well, most of you anyway!) so this is almost like a family history project for some of you! Here are the things that must be included in your essay:

1. List the first dolls that AG created, along with a photo of each and a little bit about them (e.g. What part of America they came from, their name, their books etc)
2. Include at least one paragraph in your essay about how Mattel took over Pleasant Company, back in the early 2000's, and the effects of this.

For extra credit, you can do a separate short essay on/about your Favourite american girl.

Please email the essay(s) when you are finished to me, and have them in by the 15th of November. That should give you a bit of time for research.

I will include some links that might be helpful for you:

American girl Wiki
Emily's american girl dolls
American girl playthings

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any additional questions for this assignment.

Spring poem Grades

Dear Students,
I am sure you have all been eagerly awaiting grades for your first English assignment, (write a spring-themed poem) and I think you will be pleased to know that I have finally looked through these poems, and graded them! (I have decided to give them out early, mainly because I believe I have got all of the ones that are going to be sent in, and the date for the book review to be in by is still the 19th, it hasn't changed)
First up is:

Spring

Spring is when
The birds sing.
When you hear the flower chime,
You know its spring time.
Chicks will hatch,
So bake a cookie batch.
Flowers will appear,
I hope you will hear.
Winter away!
Eater horray!
By Emily Rose Bennet

Dear Emily,
Your poem is wonderful! I love how your poem has such a lovely ring to it! Oh, and the missing "S" in Easter, was there when I received your poem. However, since it is obviously just a typo, and not an intentional or not  knowing the spelling mistake, it has not affected your grade.
Here is your grade:

A+

Well done, Emily!

Next up is:

Spring
A Haiku By: Farah Brooks
The pretty flowers,
All blooming outside of my house,
Spring all around me

Dear Farah,
I like how you did a Japanese Haiku poem, it makes your work very unique. I'm also impressed with how you got all of your spelling right.
Here is your grade:

A

Well done, Farah!

Lastly,

Ring a Ding Spring!
By Cara Clarke, age 9

Ring a Ding Spring
ting aling Ding
oh today it is Spring
oh the bells they do ring
and I feel I could sing
like a Bird and hum like a Bee!
the grass is green and the flowers
they are no higher than my knee.
and the Pretty Birdies I Know are called Bower.
the Pretty yellow chicks and little lambs that spring
are a knowing that it is deffinately spring
today with a ting aling Ding
and a Ring a Ding Spring!

Dear Cara,
I really liked your poem, but unfortunately, some of the punctuation wasn't quite right, and a couple of words where miss-spelled, but I really liked the idea of your poem, it was really unique! You just need to practice spelling and punctuation a bit more.
Here is your grade:

C+

Well done, Cara!

Okay, everyone did really really well today, and I'm sure you all did your very best! Please don't be offended at your grade, the grades where really hard for me to give out, knowing that I had to be fair, but feeling bad that I could only give Cara a C+, but please know that I had to be fair, and couldn't just give students an A+ just because I felt sorry for them. And again, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions, about your grades, or anything!

P.S. I hope you don't mind that I decided to grade these early, but please let me know if you hadn't had a chance to get your poem in yet, and I will put it on here with a grade, but it still has to be in by the 19th of October at the latest, I cannot make extra allowances and grade any of the poems for this assignments after that date.

Saturday, 12 October 2013

Assignments

Since I've had little or no entries yet for the English assignments, I will extend the deadline a week, so you now have until the 19th of October for them to be in. Please let me know if you have any questions.
